4.5⭐️ the writing was amazing and overall so addictive, i was zooming to find out what happened. i loved some of the characters but others were kinda flat which sucks but seven characters are hard to fully develop. immaculate dark academia vibes! also “i look at you and all the sonnets make sense” STOP😩😩😩

But I stayed where I was, afraid to move toward him, afraid I might lose my footing on solid ground, detach from what had anchored me before and drift out into the void of space—a vagabond, wondering moon.

am I okay?

no, no I'm not.

To be completely honest I was gonna give this a solid 3.0 stars until the last quarter or so. And I love Shakespeare sososo much so like for a book to be entirely based off Shakespeare to only be a 3.0 star read??? Oof. Is the tragic gay love story the only reason I upped this to a 4 star rating? Ye ...more

My feelings on If We Were Villains are complicated. So much of M.L. Rio's writing here is brilliant. The setting throughout the novel was decadently described and Rio has a knack for evoking atmosphere that deeply immersed me in the story. Further Rio's plotting while flawed in some ways kept me hooked all the way through the story. But where this book falters for me is its absences.

Its first absence was on a genre level. If We Were Villains doesn't explore the toxic

poetic. tragic.

a truly gripping story, whether you’ve read any shakespeare or not (although the connections between the characters is interesting to view). the development of the characters is done so well, and i found myself loving and hating them all the same. our main character, oliver, although “naïve”, tells the haunting truth of his fourth-year at dellecher, and tells it well. his relationship with the other six in his close circle is complex and harrowing, and left me heartbroken at time
