Wow. This book is definitely dense. It is very academic and takes focus to understand. On the other side of that is a story of friendship, difficult decisions, and the makings of an uprising. I learned so much about history that I didn’t know. It is a very real and raw look at colonialism that makes you face facts that many wish to ignore. It is heartbreakingly beautiful.

I loved the depth of knowledge displayed in this book and the way it addresses issues of race and colonialism. Furthermore, I love when writers aren’t afraid to tell. I think the “show don’t tell” has gone quite far and this is an excellent example of why it need not be the standard for everything.
