I wasn’t expecting to enjoy this story as much as I did. The plot itself felt like a mix of The Hunger Games and Throne of Glass. Yet it had its own originality. To be a little girl saved by the vampire King and to be protected by him, for the first 22 years of her life was amazing.

Shelves: fantasy

Here is the deal, I started reading this in-between having read ACOMAF, while waiting for Amazon to ship me ACOWAR. I think that was the wrong thing to do. I also wonder about these five star reviews…because this book feels like the wish version of A Court of series. I know it’s vampires but you also have a place called ‘the house of night’ and a similar fantasy vibe to the other series. They even say ‘thank the gods’ just like Pythian dialog does.

I really wanted to like this book, but I couldn’t. I trudged through 80% of this book before, in my eyes, it finally got entertaining. The world building felt just enough without completely overwhelming me, but the characters felt flat and I couldn’t find myself caring about them at all. I usually swoon for a golden retriever ML but I f Interesting enough to keep me reading, but it’s not enough for me to call this a great work. If it weren’t for the ending. I would have been pretty disappointed.

I usually swoon for a golden retriever ML but I felt very little towards Raihn.

I felt a lot towards Oraya with her loyalty towards her adoptive vampire father and her blooming attraction to Raihn conflicting on all fronts. But 4 months is all it took to make her fall in love, doubt her father’s intentions, and betray her father. I know Vincent was a FAWK UP of a father; he was an evil whacko, but loyalty and familiarity and just time with him made Oraya care for him. And that was broken in just a few months. I wasn’t convinced, the story felt less believable and I felt like I had no room to really connect to any situation or character.

Anywho, I wanted to believe Oraya’s love for Raihn, I really did. Maybe if we had more time, more circumstances, for their relationship to develop, but the impeding war outside the tournament did not give our characters that luxury and our MC made such a rash decision in the end.

I told myself (STUPIDLY) if Raihn dies, I would read book 2. Period. Because I was finally alive after our live birds ended up the finalists in this tournament. I knew maybe… maybe we would get a huge character development arc. Oraya kills her new love, because powerful. Fights against her father. Then I would believe it. I would love to see this type of pain. This kind of tale. I’m not happy with happy, I fear… I’m happy with unhappy and pain, I fear…

When I told you I was cackling when Oraya killed Raihn. FINALLY something different, something new and raw would appear for our MC. Or so I THOUGHT.

But my dumb ass forgot something… IF she kills Raihn, WHAT IF SHE USES HER WISH TO BRING HIM BACK TO LIFE?

And guess wtf she did. She wished for him to have won the Kejari and just when I thought this story wouldn’t be predictable… but I was still half rewarded. RAIHN IS A MARKED HEIR to the enemy vampire house.

And after he killed Vincent, OUR DEADLY PRINCESS IS ALSO MARKED WITH THE SYMBOL AS THE HEIR to her respective vampire house (I’m sorry, I don’t remember the houses names)

Now we’re taking.

Everything is a mess now. I’m glad I finished this but I don’t know if I even want to read book 2. But I already said.. if Raihn died, I would… AND TECHNICALLY HE DID. *sighhhh* ...more
