Mild spoilers
In Trial Run, we get a quick visit into the world of Namid, one of S Lynn Helton’s recurring characters in the Wild Heritance line of books. This short novella is Namid’s entrance exam for joining the Shadowers (a nefarious (until you know them) guild of thieves). Not the nicest way to make a living, she would agree, but it beats the alternatives available to her.
Namid is given two difficult tasks to complete before she will be accepted as a member of the guild. She has to win a bat ...more

The prequel novelette Trial Run, which precedes the Wild Heritance series, centers on main character Namid, who aspires to join the Shadowers (a guild of thieves) by engaging in a two-part Trial orchestrated by her nemesis, Aahmes.
Naturally, this trial involves both an impossible task and direct confrontation with Aahmes, requiring just the sort of problem solving and conflict one hopes to get from a story. The story follows a heist arc, with Namid receiving her challenge, creating a plan to acc ...more

Exciting read
Having enjoyed Duplicity of Power, I was looking forward to reading Trial Run, the prequel novella, and it didn’t disappoint.
We join a teenage Namid as she looks to complete a trial to officially become a member of the band of thieves, called the Shadowers. Namid accepts a challenge from her nemesis, Aahmes, who comes up with an impossible theft, as well as the challenge of fighting him as part of her weapons-work. Will she succeed in defeating Aahmes and stealing the Star of Coren ...more

This fantasy novella was a great read and a good introduction to the series. It was an exciting book with the main characters well defined. I hope that we get to find out why Aahmes was so antagonistic towards Namid in later books. He was a really nasty piece of work!
I found my heart thumping when Namid was in the mage’s castle, with all the weird things that were going on, and I just had to finish reading to find out what happened.

Trial Run is an entertaining, well-written, and fast-paced story centred around the main character’s journey to get admitted to an underground organization. It is the last test before she becomes an official member.
I enjoyed the reading, but mostly because I had read the first book, I knew some of the characters, I knew the organization, I knew bits and pieces of the world, and I knew the continuation of the story to a certain extent.

I'm not usually a big fan of short stories, but having read Books 1 & 2 of Wild Inhertance and being something of a completist, I decided to give this a go.
This is how you write a short story. It's got pace, it has a single, clear plotline and an engaging MC.
This book follows Namid, on a kind of initiation test to become a fully-fledged Shadower. Something that clearly means the world to her. The test is set by her nemesis and is threfore seemingly impossible. But what I love about Namid is that ...more

A prequel to the author's Wild Heritance series, this novella tells the story of Namid, a sassy teenager who aspires to join a guild of thieves called the Shadowers. Her rival Aahmes challenges her to an impossible theft, which leads to a series of trials for young Namid. The narrative moves quickly, the worldbuilding is handled well, and just enough hints and teases are left to entice readers to continue with the series. I'm not personally a fan of stories that glamorize theft, but it's within

Fantasy with Daggers and Sword
The world building was just enough to intrigue without being boring.
Namid is a blend of strength and vulnerability with some sass against her opponent.
The story had twist and turns, especially at the end that I continued to read.
I devoured the story in a few hours as I wanted to see what would happen next.
Definitely a good read for anyone who enjoys a fantasy adventure.
