update: hi everyone! I wanted to share a quick note regarding my earlier review. when I expressed disappointment about the overuse of the toxic parent trope, I wasn't aware that the author had personally experienced this (thanks a lot to my wonderful friend @ash telling me about the same). It makes sense why the author would want to include their own experiences, and I certainly don't mean to disrespect or in ...more

i really gotta start reading more desi books! i mean the mere fact that karina watched shah rukh khan with subtitles because she doesn’t understand hindi (JUST LIKE ME) and she wanted to steer clear of all the vases in ace’s house because she has watched khabi khushi khabi gham so many times (BEST SHAH RUKH KHAN MOVIE HANDS DOWN)! i have never felt even more represented, I am glad that my parents aren’t this controlling but still it was nice to see a desi character who liked english more than ma

a half a year later since harvy first asked sarah to read this she finally did it! okay SO, i liked it.
this book was pretty darn cute and i really liked the characters, i think my favourite thing really was the vulnerability written in this novel. the author did a really good job of depicting certain emotions and feelings (particularly unexplainable ones) as a desi child growing up in america. this book really addresses a lot of issues regarding combatting familial pressures with personal desir ...more

I. Love. This. Book.
I cried through half of it, but I don't regret it even for a second. As a brown Girl, this book was too much for me. Too much relatable. Too much honest and brutal.
To top it off, when I was in school, I wanted to study English in college too, Just like the main character Myra. But unlike her, I never found the courage to tell my parents that I don't want to study biology. This book was like opening those wounds again, but I'm so glad I read this. I wish I had read this book ...more

I don't need book bfs I need a dadu. Everyone needs a dadu.
I thought this book was a happy giddy book bro not somebody calling out my entire life. It doesn't help that I decided to read this in a train travelling in the mountains while it was raining and all I wanted to do was sob. This was way too hard to read as someone who has really similar parents. I have so many friends who go through what karina went through and are forced to do and become something they don't want.

YOU GUYS. YOU GUYS. EVERYONE SHUT UP AND GO READ THIS BOOK RIGHT NOW!!!!
Hands down one of my favourites of this year. I read this last week and I have been in a reading slump ever since because NOTHING will every compare. I used to HATE reading contemporaries, but this book changed everything for me. Its full of all the feels. I laughed, I *almost* cried, I screamed (a lot), I blushed, and I could not put this book down. Where can I buy an Ace Clyde?????? *agressively slams credit card* Get you ...more

nothing too deep but isn't it funny when love interests go "you're the strongest woman i've ever met" and the woman in question is about as strong as one-ply toilet paper. she doesn't have fire in her eyes, she has toilet water

I was so excited to read this because it is one of the first Bengali rep books I’ve come across. But it was rather disappointing; it was boring and there was nothing to keep the reader interested enough to enjoy finishing the book.
I found the Bengali rep too generalised; it was more of a Desi rep - nothing specific to Karina being Bengali, which was disappointing. Also, I hate how Bengali culture and mindset was presented as backward and overly strict. But I did love Dadu, she’s my favourite ch ...more

this book would have been a solid five stars had i been less problematic.
let me explain. i read to escape from reality. this book however felt like someone wrote down my exact life and handed it to me. except for ace, of course. do you think someone like that exists out of fiction?! even some conversations that the mc had with her parents and friends reminded me of my own. constant deja vu. and that is my only complain. obviously its not anyone's fault but mine.
however 10/10 for ace clyde.
