This is an enjoyably strange fairytale, and I especially like how the young "elder sister" is in the form of an old woman throughout most of the book. The dynamic between her and wizard Howl, an infuriating young "slither-outer" of a man, was great. I did find the plot a bit hard to follow at times, and I'm afraid I might prefer the film a bit in that respect. Still, this feels like a modern classic.

I put off reading this for ages because I wasn't convinced I would enjoy it. I was so wrong. This was such a delightfully whimsical read! The characters are marvelous and I loved reading Sophie and Howl's adventure. Definitely one I could see myself revisiting.
