I have to say that I don't get what all the fuss is about. I loved this book. Yes, Atticus has changed but he isn't the horrible racist he's made out to be, he's just an old man who is afraid of the changes that are happening too quickly for him. I'm sure there were many people like that in the South.

I am greatly disappointed in this last novel by Harper Lee. This novel lacks the emotion of To Kill a Mockingbird. The main character of Go Set A Watchman reigns as Jean Louise Finch, or Scout. Scout returns home for her yearly two week visit to Alabama amid the civil rights movement and the emergence of a new attitude in the South. Scout questions her father and her uncle in their seemingly passive stance. Scout cannot fathom that at face value, all seems unchanged, but undercurrents expose the ...more

I read a few one-star reviews of this that lambasted the book and author for being a racist, horrible piece of trash. I couldn't disagree more. Were there some pretty shocking and degrading ideas about black people and their ability to become full citizens and function in society? Of course. I have no doubt that there were scores of people all over the country thinking that way in the fifties and sixties, and let's face it, there still are.

I was disappointed that this book was not what I was looking forward to read. Scout (known as Jean Louise) leaves NYC and returns to back to Maycomb, where she is engaged in some undefined career-girl enterprise. For the first few chapters, she is avoiding her 'lowborn' but well-meaning suitor, Henry Clinton; also fighting aunt Alexandra wearing her medieval corset.
