Premetto di non provare un enorme trasporto nei confronti delle storie "spaziali". Ma ho adorato il film "Apollo 13", che rivedo sempre con lo stesso piacere e la stessa ansia. La storia di Watney mi ha ricordato molto quella di Lovell e compagni. E ho divorato il libro! Unica pecca: troppe spiegazioni tecniche ma non si poteva fare diversamente. Del resto, ancora oggi mi domando cosa diavolo siano le "coordinate cardaniche"!!! ...more

4.5 stars, rounded up. What an incredible story of survival and human solidarity.
I had to take off that half star because of Mark's characterization. He was so damn cheerful, all the way through the book. This was great fun, and his humor, to me was amazing, but he was stuck, on Mars, for over a year. There had to be some psychological trauma, depression, something, but there just wasn't enough of that to be 100% believable to me.

Potatoes and disco. Hehehe.

Easy, quick read. The multiple narrators and switched point of views gets a little cumbersome, but overall it's very well done. It almost reads like a non-fiction book, sort of a Dummies for People Stranded on Mars. Anyone with a remote interest in space travel should enjoy it.

I also like that the book doesn't waste time on character building or gratuitous subplots. Maybe the author would be good at it, maybe he wouldn't, but the book is pure science with occasional co ...more

words can't describe how much i loved reading this book
i finished this book in two days it was the fastest I've finished this big of a book
I've read the ebook version by the way
after i downloaded it i added otto my virtual library and the book was 600 pages there but when i tried to find the 600 page version on goodreads i couldn't find it so i then used a online site to convert the book from epub to pdf the book was then 244 pages long so i could've of read the smaller version than the 600 page words can't describe how much i loved reading this book

this book is now my number one favorite scifi book of all time my second best is the star wars saga the ones with luke skywalker not anikin i was gonna wait till i get tone book from the library on monday but then i decided to fuck it and so i downloaded the book to my computer then i read a bit of it before i went to be si i thought this might actually be a good book then come sunday morning i started reading it then i thought oh my god oh my god OH MY FUCKING GOD this book was so intense the storyline was literally a survival scenario one person against a planet that is not earth and the main character over come impossible odds again again and again
the storyline goes back and forth from the main character to earth then to ares three which he was part of
once the story line turned to earth to nasa to be exact they discover that he is alive and is surviving on mars then they all went overdrive to figure out how to get in contact with him to help him survive by that time the whole world knew he has survived and thus becoming the number one story in the whole world and every single person in the world is staying tuned on the story of the century and in truth all the us departments is focused on getting him home even nsa pitched in to update nasa's software ares three was kept in the dark of marks survival because they were worried that they would all break down that once the realized that they left mark there who survived that they left him there to die but they caved in and decided to tell them the truth which they left out of all the emails from earth
enough about the story line let me talk about mark watney
i think the only reason that he survived was because of his way of looking at life he always see the good in life and if the situation was bad he turns in into a good thing what I'm trying to say that mark was above all else a a comedian and his act source for jokes is his life and henceforth the world
I've never read such a funny book i mean most of it was all serious but at every bad situation end he always had something funny to say at some points i cracked up for minutes on end i guess i can say he's funny in a arrogant kind of way which made the scenarios more funny
let me give you some scenarios
on his down time he raided his crew mates stuff for something to read or watch org for some music to listen to so in short there was only disco music to listen to and seventies shows to watch and murder mysteries to read so in short he learn to hate seventies music the seventies shows was ok to watch and the murder mysteries was interesting to read he tried once he got in contact with nasa to get music other that disco music but they couldn't get hime anything else because there not enough gb or ram to transfer them to him
at one point there was gonna be a committee to investigate why the ares crew left him and he said to that the he'll refute them and that he used a sexual term towards the committee which I'm not gonna say which cracked me up for 5 minutes
thats all I'm gonna say i tried to keep all my reviews short and to the point so hope i did just that
i give this book a 10/10 stars for its humor and intense storyline
