I get that this is supposed to be a classic, but it just did not appeal to me. There's a lot of racism (and yes I KNOW that this was written in 1899 and is definitely a reflection of its time). There's likely levels (upon levels) that I missed (I'm reading for pleasure, not English 101) but I'm not working that hard to appreciate a novel. I guess that from a cultural standpoint it's good to know the story - but I've watched Apocalypse Now for years without knowing this and still found the story ...more
