Wow! The story of long-distance runner Louis Zamperini and his fellow POWs held in various Japanese camps during World War II was alternating mesmerizing and shocking, but mostly shocking. It was shocking in brutality, shocking in starvation, and shocking in overall treatment of these prisoners by various guards especially the man they called 'the Bird.'

Yet, to have been able to overcome the extreme hardships of beatings, starvation, deprivations, and more makes for compelling reading. The phys
