Wow, a seriously amazing and powerful book about Survival, Resilience, Redemption, and ultimately, Peace. I have read quite a few nonfiction and historical fiction about WWII, but I haven't read much about what it was like to be in Japan at the time, except in a peripheral sense. I had no idea it was so brutal and so widespread, and pretty much the requirement for a Japanese soldier to treat the POW's that way. But even more powerful was how Louie overcame the psychological damage from the war i ...more

I am a huge reader of WW II fiction and nonfiction, primarily the European theater. This biography about Louis Zamperini, a Pacific POW, is the first book pertaining to the Pacific theater I have read, and it is absolutely unforgettable. I knew nothing about Mr. Zamperini prior to reading this biography which worked in my favor as it allowed the story to unfold without my ever being able to guess what would come next. I am filled with admiration for Mr. Zamerpini's inspiring heroics, fortitude a ...more

Laura Hillenbrand did an amazing job researching and bringing the story of Louie Zamperini to life in such brilliant clarity you would think it was happening right this minute.

Louie Zamperini, survival of a plane crash, 47 days at sea in just a raft, picked up Japanese enemies, taken prisoner, unleashed Japan's pitbull "The Bird" on him daily for 2 years and is still around to tell this tale is amazing just knowing he's still alive.

This story is not only about survival of the most cruel of inhum

The life of Louis Zamperini was told in a way that made this book hard to put down and was told in a way that kept you riveted to the end. So much wonderful stuff was written about this book that I cannot add any more.

I think this may be the first book I have read that told of the WWII experience with Japan, rather than Hitler/Germany. It was a very interesting book detailing the life of one particular man, with lots of statistics about others thrown in. I am very glad I read this book.
