An enchanting April in Italy, a castle, 4 women. Tranquillity is the goal.
It is an enchanting book. The characters are very lifelike and well rounded. The language, style and pace are excellent.
While this might at first sight be a book about nothing (or very small things), behind all the small things and conversations, we see the world of the protagonists unfold itself.

An amusing tale of how a trip to Italy changes the people involved.

Steady, sweet and to savour. Such beautiful writing that you'd never find now. Written in the 1920's, it is a book of it's time - in between wars, a time of transformation from victorian values to the roaring young twenties - a transformation from the harshness and mistrust of people to the best and loveliness of people. This is a lovely gentle book, with some beautifully drawn characters and a gentle almost fairytale story. In the early 1920s four strangers decide to leave a drab London behind them and seek rest and happiness by renting a castle in Italy for April. Each woman has, in her own way become ground down and dried up by the drab life at home. And each, in her own way is seeking peace and solitude on her holiday.
