Original Rating 2 stars
This was a re-read for me. I read this the first time in 11th grade and hated it! I thought it was so boring, and I have to admit that high-school me was not that far off the mark. There are some really great moments of action (there is a murderous monster after all), and I found the Monster's tale particularly poignant (one of the main reasons I raised my rating), and the question of who is the monster can make great conversation amongst very nerdy people. 2.5 stars.
Ugh. Classics are always hit or miss for me and this one was a hard miss. Sure, it's creative in terms of the monster creation, but the execution bored me to tears. Usually I enjoy an epistolary style novel, but not this one. The pacing was incredibly slow and the narration just did not do it for me. I could care less about the characters. I honestly would have DNF'd if this book was not a classic and even now I'm kind of kicking myself that I slogged through it. Life is too short. ...more

I liked this book when I first read it years ago. Now I loved it.
The question of who is the real monster is so blatant yet I still enjoyed all of it (other than rolling my eyes at Victor but of course we are supposed to do that). Themes of stereotypes and judgement of others are also so timely.
I would have given this 4 stars but its status as classic and the context of it being written bumped it. If you haven't read this yet, shame on you. And go do it now. ...more
