I could not put this book down. I loved the twists and turned and how all the characters came together.
It was very meaty, and if you are looking for a "light" read this is not your book.
It took a look at the dark side of humanity, and how individuals can be cold and cruel for their own enjoyment.
I found a parallel in the Vanger family and Lisbeth as to how mental illness can ravage a family, but in different ways. The Vangers were the "haves", so as it did not elude to it specifically, how coul ...more

I am a coward. Jessie knows this, but still sent me this book.
Another friend, when she heard I was reading it, recoiled in horror and proclaimed it the most misogynistic book she'd ever read. Upon further questioning, she revealed that she'd read the entire trilogy.
So I read it. It's good. It is. I like the Swedishness of it. The unfamiliar place and culture. It's got some hallmarks of my favorite mysteries: small remote community, lots of characters with a "detective" that finds himself immers ...more

I started this book with trepidation as many people have said it is a tough read. I kept waiting for something obviously difficult or slow in the first 300 pages (the marker that had been commented on by others). And while the Swedish town names are difficult to trip over, as I have no idea how to pronounce them (they end up being butchered in my head to the tune of hamburgers and watermelon), and I will certainly agree that things picked up around page 300 and moved much more swiftly, I did not

It took a perfect storm of events for me to pick up this much-hyped book, namely, I read through all the books I brought on vacation and the B&B had this one on the bookswap shelf. Not to mention the massive buildup of pressure from friends and family (except you, Megan, I should have listened!) that if only I would "put up with the slow opening and give the series a try, the last book would be totally worth it!" Which is what, in another 1000+ pages of Swedish white-collar corporational legales

I thought this was a pretty good book. I read this because it was available when my last travel book was finished... I don't usually like to read the "popular" book that's currently going around, but this one was ok and worth the time.

This was an enjoyable thriller. In all honesty I don't feel like it lived up to the hype, but I'm glad I read it and look forward to seeing the movie. I will probably read the rest of the trilogy; I have a feeling the Salander and Blomkvist's relationship will become more interesting, which will make the storyline more appealing to me.
