Everyone else has read this, so gave it a spin. Perhaps it wasn't my cup of tea, but I suppose I liked it more than I disliked it. Hm, I wonder if Spice, the drug, got its name from this book.

A true classic of science fiction.
I have to sheepishly admit that I have had this book in my collection since my college days, but had put off reading it for one reason and another for decades. I think the length as well as a casual comment by a friend put me off it. Oh, I intended to read it...eventually...but well, there's that saying about the road to Hell. For the record, I had been told that this had a huge vocabulary to get used to (much like A Clockwork Orange) and flipping back and forth ...more

Dune reminded me of Lawrence of Arabia, Star Wars, and James Cameron's Avatar -- all rolled into one confusing ball of bizarre and enthralling science fiction. There have been enough reviews of the book over the years so I won't pretend to jump in with anything more than my own two cents. I will only say that it is a classic which must be read, and as so many critics have rightly said before me, it reframes an understanding of some sci-fi greats that Frank Herbert inspired.
