Nick has moved east and next-door to Jay Gatsby who lives in a well-kept mansion and is the talk of all the town. Gatsby throws magnificent parties, his guests laugh and drink and sing the summer away, but at Nick's first invitation he noted '...but no one swooned backward on Gatsby, and no French bob touched Gatsby's shoulder, and no singing quartets were formed with Gatsby's head for one link.'

This is actually the first novel I've read for school that I've actually liked, maybe because I started reading it before it was set, I'm not sure. But I actually really liked it. Initially I found the story a bit of a drag, but that was mainly because there was the whole explanation as to why Nick was there so it took a bit longer to get into it than I would've liked, but the last 3 chapters were fast paced and that made up for the slow introduction.
