Excellent and beautifully dark book! Some say it is overwrought, but then I suppose I enjoy an overwrought tale, especially when I need a good escape. Du Maurier truly understands how to develop compelling characters. I especially love the unnamed protagonist whose perspective is so full of imaginative wanderings. Now I can’t wait to read more novels by DuMaurier. I highly recommend this book!

I understand that some people would not like this book. Much of it is slow paced. Not everyone will appreciate the poetic writing style. The heroine is passive. I agree it dragged a bit at first. If the style and descriptions are a bit much, it helps set the mood and tone. As for the heroine, I could relate to her. The insecurities made her real and sympathetic. Overall, it's a good book, but I wouldn't consider it a must read.

A game of two halves. The first, ruined by a narrator that aggravates me so much I have never managed to finish this before. The second half, however, is as close to perfect as you can get.
