Re-reading Rebecca after a gap of 30 years has been a huge revelation for me. My younger self had been intrigued by the mystery and suspense, haunted by the dominating presence of Manderley. The older me marveled at how skilfully the author has used the themes of marriage and murder to throw light on women and patriarchy in 20th century Britain. This book took me completely by surprise. I went into it blind and expected a book about a character named Rebecca who lives in a fancy house and some gothic elements.
I can’t even go into detail without spoiling. So, let’s just say it kind of felt like a ghost story, a psychological analysis and a mystery detective novel. Great psychological thriller. Read it many, many years ago so this was a re-read but I’d forgotten a lot. Sometimes I wanted to shake the new Mrs. De Winter and just tell her to be confident but her innocence drives the story. And it is interesting to see her grow as the story progresses.
