Re-read, February 2022.
Love it even more in audiobook form (and, frankly, understood more about the action sequences since I couldn't gloss over them). Josh Hurley is peak Rune.

This book was so refreshing! It had platonic male friendships where they express their emotions and say they love each other, and the romantic storyline doesn’t overwhelm the pre-existing relationships. It’s also very gay, which I loved. It also has a main character who is a survivor of sexual assault, and it’s handled fairly decently. The world building is GENIUS - the author clearly knows his stuff.

I bought it on a whim after seeing it in a random queer book rec list, it’d been years since I read anything for fun and I didn’t even know if I liked fantasy.

Right away, KD’s world building drew me in and the banter between Rune and Brand had me laughing out loud.

So I bought The Last Sun and The Hanged Man in June 2021. I have read them four times since then and love them to death, time to finally leave at least a short review!
The story is a great, fresh take on Urban Fantasy. I love every single character, even if I don't always agree with the roughness/brutality of their actions. The relationship between Rune and Brand (deep friendship, brotherhood, love) repeatedly makes me cry in the best way.

I have avoided writing a review for The Last Sun by K.D. Edwards for a number of reasons. The first is that there is so much to unpack here. From the moment the reader opens the book, they are pulled Jumanji-like into a world that seems familiar with some very different rules.
