I really enjoyed the two previous books by this author (The Breakdown and Behind Closed Doors) so was looking forward to reading this. However, it didn't quite mange to pull off the psychological web of lies and deceit that made the first two books so memorable.
The opening scene is terrific and full of promise for a thrilling read. Finn McQuaid and his girlfriend Layla are driving back to their home in Devon after a skiing holiday in France when Finn pulls into a picnic spot to use the toilets. ...more

This book opens up with a young couple at a picnic area in the dark of night. The fellow goes to the restroom and upon his return he discovers that his girlfriend, Layla, is missing. In his recollections, we learn of his history of violence. We learn that Finn has not been totally forthcoming with the police and that he still holds some secrets. Because of these revelations there is doubt that Layla was kidnapped. Could Finn have killed her? Did she ran out of fear? All that is known for sure is

Thank you to Netgalley, St. Martin’s Press and B.A. Paris for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I was very lucky to snag an advanced copy of this book. It was in high demand and not everyone who wanted one got one. So I was super excited to read this. I couldn’t believe my good fortune. I really am never that lucky. This might have amped up my expectation for an outstanding read. Don’t get me wrong. I enjoyed the book. But I don’t think it lived up to all of the hype.

What a disappointment, B. A. Paris! I loved the author's first book Behind Closed Doors and enjoyed her second book, The Breakdown, but this was such a let down. Going in towards the end of the book, I was torn between 3 and 4 stars. It had been fast reading and kept my interest and while it wasn't wowing me, I was enjoying my time spent with the story. The writing wasn't as good as her other books, but the storyline grabbed me inititally and the characters were interesting enough, although not
