Six kids from the street gang aptly named the Dregs, all thieves and thugs and more besides, embark on an impossible heist that will make their fortunes if they can pull it off. Set in a fantasy world, the Dregs live and fight on the streets of a busy trading port, not unlike an 18th century Amsterdam. Theirs is a world of brothels and gambling dens and rich merchants controlling it all. Kaz Brekker is the brilliant criminal mastermind, anti-hero and leader of the Dregs who learnt his craft grow ...more

3.5 Stars.

I LOVED this cast of characters- Kaz, Inej (my girl!! She was amazing), Nina, Mattias, Jesper, Wylan- I thought all of them were fantastic. The banter and interaction between this band of thieves and riffraff is what drove the novel for me. The action and the plot? Could have been a little smoother, in my opinion- hence the 3.5 rating. But I am definitely going to be picking up the next one to continue on with these guys.

Kaz Brekker is the brains behind a gang of misfits in the slums of Ketterdam, a neighboring island to Ravka. Kaz is also known as Dirtyhands and has been known to pull off impossible feats. But he is always one step ahead. And he deals harshly wi ...more

I tried reading this book a couple years ago but couldn't get into it. I decided to give it another go this month. I'd heard good things, and it has such a high rating here on GR. Unfortunately, this book & I are not meant to be.

These characters are lackluster at best. There is practically no backstory on any of them at all until 1/3 of the way through. Even then, their backstories come in giant info dumps, and the personalities & demeanors of the present-day characters themselves never seem to
