What Members Thought

Every year there is that one book that nearly all of my fabulous GR friends love, and I shake my head in bewilderment and think that I must have read a different book than everyone else ... well, here is that book for me in 2021! I went into this one expecting a dark, gothic, horror read, but instead it was just a bizarre, psychological mystery with a cat narrator. 🙄
From the second chapter when Olivia, the cat, is talking and quoting the Bible, I had an inkling where the plot was headed, as it i ...more

The first line of the story:
Olivia lands heavily on my stomach first thing, making high-pitched sounds like clockwork. If there’s anything better than a cat on the bed, I don’t know about it.
After the first twist, this made my stomach turn.
After the second twist:
I thought back on the trip to the mall to get some leggings with glitter. I wanted to throw the book in the bin.
At 64% of the story I felt like this: “I am running, rowing with horror.”
I kept saying, What the Heck is this?? I was mo ...more

This was a unique book; I wasn't sure where it was going, with the various POVs. There were some interesting twists as the book progressed, and it kept my attention the entire time. I thought that this was a creative way to craft the story.

I originally read this for part of a Halloween horror reads challenge. I needed a book about a cat. I think I'm abandoning this challenge because I definitely need a few palate cleansers after this one. It's well written. It's suspenseful. It's creative. It also happens to be the second book I've read this week that involved a lot of child abuse as a major plot line and it's time for something happier. I'm off to find a Halloween cozy mystery.
I'm not NOT recommending it. It was clever and at tim ...more

The less you know about this one going into it, the better. This was a very creepy, disorienting, sad read. It starts out very strangely, but you have to persevere; I'm glad I did. Very interested in reading other books by this author now.
