What a pleasure! This book is full of science, reasoning out solutions to difficult problems, creativity, humor, friendship, teamwork, communications, and a quest to save the earth. Protagonist Ryland Grace wakes up from a deep sleep and finds himself in what appears to be space. We gradually learn how he got there via flashbacks. The main storyline focuses on his journey and the goal.

Gosh, this book really took me by surprise! I had read Weir's other well-known book, The Martian and found it very slow. It just didn't capture me, as it did most others, so I went into this book thinking I probably wouldn't like it either. My SIL had read book and kept encouraging me to give it a try. Wow! What an incredible journey this book was!! Some of the more science-y stuff was a little dry at times, but I wouldn’t change anything. Everything added to the storyline and it didn’t feel unnecessary looking back now. I have felt every emotion reading this and the hype around it is fully justified. And yes I listened to it on audio which made the experience vastly more enjoyable. Excited to see how they adapt this into a movie.
My first 5 star of the year!!!
I genuinely love this book. There is this one moment in the book that pops into my head all the time and has me always dissolving into stitches because its oh so very scientific: "Um."
The humor I loved in The Martian is still prevalent. Oh, I swear the best part of this book was Rocky. Loved him. Loved the dynamic between Rocky and Ryland.
I'm so buying this the next time I get the chance. ...more
