Original review: This was a decent enough book. The book is written primarily from Elena's (a popular high school girl) perspective. She meets the new student, Stefan, and immediately likes him and decides she wants him. The first half of the book is her pursuing him, the second half is her meeting another mysterious guy and trying to find out about Stefan's past. We find out her mysterious stalker is Stefan's brother Damon. Damon and Stefan are both vampires who killed each other in a fight ove ...more

I couldn't really get into this book. A friend of mine told me the tv show was great but the first season on dvd was checked out from my library. I had heard that the show was based on a book series, so I figured I would look into it. I wasn't impressed. I couldn't stand Elena among other characters, plot lines, objects and events. I loved the TV series, and I decided to read the books. This book is SO different from the TV series, but it is great in its own way.

Things I liked:
- Stefan is great!
- Katherine is so much nicer and better in the books!

Things I didn't like:
- Since it is so different from the TV show, it gets a little confusing at times.

The show, despite it's pitfalls and melodramatic love triangle that won't die, beats the books. This one was the best of the two I read but left much to be desired after all. The characters were at least likeable enough so this one got a generous four star rating. ...more

I've watch the first several seasons of TVD, still have two or more to go, and thought I'd give the book's that inspired the show a read. I realized very quickly a lot was changed for the show, which is okay, but the story seemed...boring? Stilted? I'm not sure. I do think if I didn't have the TV show as a reference I would've stopped this book. I think I may have even started this book once years ago, long before watching the show, and couldn't get interested.

I had put this book on hold through my library after starting to watch the show and just waited and waited. I am pretty sure I was a number in the 50's when I first put it on hold.
After reading the reviews, I realized that the book wasn't going to be anything like the show, but I went ahead and waited for it and waited.
Finally it arrived...it's a very light read and quick (I read both book 1 and 2 in under 8 hrs).

This is the first book in the Vampire Diaries series.

I read about the new TV series based on this series and saw part of the first episode and got interested in reading the books so I picked this book and thought I would give it a try.. The book flew!!
