Mexican Gothic was a much awaited read that fell totally flat for me. Gods of jade and shadow was much better, drawing from mythology and with magical realism that I loved.
This one again was not so engaging. I liked the premise and how it began but it just did not retain my attention. Elvis was an interesting character and his political associations gave me an insight into Mexican history. Maite though was kind of repetitive as in not much happened with her that was different! So disappointed. I wish I could fully pinpoint what it was about this story that I didn't like. I never felt pulled in, maybe. The story felt jumpy and disjointed. The dialogue never felt natural and the characters never seemed real. I found the subject interesting but I didn't find it presented in a way that felt immersive or fascinating. Ugh, I wish I'd loved it. I really wanted to - I was so excited for this story but this one was just wasn't for me.
