A long, meandering story. It took at least 100 pages for me to feel pulled in. About half way, the story did take some interesting turns and I was finally intrigued. I've already bought book 2, so I'm looking forward to reading it - but I'm pretty glad I waited this long to read it.

I hope there are a lot of questions answered in book 2 and less world building. ...more

4.5 stars rounded down. Alex Stern has been able to see ghosts all her life. After some tragic events Alex is recruited to attend Yale and be a member of Lethe house. Lethe oversees the other 8 secret societies at Yale, all of whom use a different form of magic. The book started a bit slow but it really picked up it's pace towards the end. It was creepy. I liked Alex and the other main characters. My one complaint was I had a hard time keeping track of which society was which except for Manuscri ...more

I really liked this book. I loved the mystery aspect of the book. I liked the ghosts and magic system and how it centered around New Haven. It wrapped up perfectly yet still left you wanting if not needing to read the next book as they take a trip to Hell. I'm guessing that's where Alex, Dawes, and the group are heading in the next book.

I have a few people that i look at their reviews since we have similar tastes and i usually agree with them. I chose to go into reading this book blind. I shouldn't have. After i finished i went and looked for my friends reviews and...yeah, i really should have looked. I didn't hate this book. It takes a lot for me to hate a book.
