Wow! Easily one of my favorite reads of 2017! Why did I wait so long to jump into this story? There is so much to love about Six of Crows from outstanding to world-building, a fantastic crew of anti-heroes at the helm, a cool magic system, and a seemingly impossible heist - and that's just the tip of the iceberg. I don't know if it's because I mistakenly read King of Scars before Crooked Kingdom, but I appreciate the characters and their journeys so much more this time because I know where (some) they are going. I need to cherish Mattias & Nina while I can. [Ugh, Nina. You grew on me, you selfless thing.]

4 stars. Really great first installment to the series. It was action packed and character driven and I ended up really enjoying it. I will admit that I struggled with the beginning, about the first 50-70 pages or so but once I got past there I was hooked until the very end. Everything about this worked for me from the writing, to the plot, to the setting, to the alternating chapters. This was a well put together novel.

This was my first experience with Leigh Bardugo's writing and I am so thoroughly impressed. I know that this is a spin off of her Grisha trilogy, which I haven't read but this one can definitely be read without knowledge of that series. I will say though that I struggled with the beginning of this one because I feel like the world is already so established and I had trouble keeping up but I got into it pretty quickly. Also some of the terms were a bit confusing but again, I caught on pretty quickly.

The writing was absolutely amazing and the world building was very scenic and drew me in and made me so invested in the world. I loved it and I think she did a wonderful job with it and was one of my favorite aspects of this book. Another of my favorite aspects about this book were the character's and their relationships with each other. It was so much fun watching all six characters interact with each other.

This story follows six characters and alternates chapters between five of them. I absolutely adore this cast of characters. I didn’t feel like there was a weak link in this group at all and I think they all went through really great development, especially Kaz and Matthias. I love the dynamics of this group and their conversations were hilarious and snarky. There’s also a teeny tiny bit of romance but it definitely takes a backseat to the heist and the action which I appreciated immensely.

I really don’t want to say anything else because I think going into it not knowing too much is best. I recommend this if you love a good heist story and character driven reads. I cannot wait until the next book is released and I am definitely interested in reading the Grisha trilogy because I need more of Leigh Bardugo’s writing. ...more

Full review to come, and spoilers may lie ahead! Thoughts for now...definitely a lot of character building which I was not mad about because all of the characters were splendid. That being said though, the heist story is action-packed but slowed down by all of the character building. So its a bit of a trade off. Love the world though. I was surprised that the full story doesn't wrap up and Crooked Kingdom won't be its own fresh plot...but I will definitely be reading on right away. ...more
