Just loved this book.

In 99% of the Hallmark movies the hero from the big city goes to a small town to buy up the tree farm/bakery/B&B and instead falls in love with the farmer/baker/inn-er. If you, like me, have ever wondered what became of his big city girlfriend, this is the answer.

I loved Nora. I loved Charlie. I loved the banter and the complicated relationships that Emily Henry writes so well.

TV-16 Language and mature themes

Dang it all! I really wanted to love this book.... but sadly, I didn't even like it.

This book kept popping up on lists of suggested reads and has won a Goodreads award. The back cover blurb makes it super appealing and promises a new twist on poking fun at favorite tropes. This book kept popping up on lists of suggested reads and has won a Goodreads award. The back cover blurb makes it super appealing and promises a new twist on poking fun at favorite tropes. I'm all for that. It started out great and had some witty writing that made me laugh out loud. I love the dynamic relationships - the sisters in particular have great emotional conflicts that make them both so lovable. The bucket list, makeovers, and general shenanigans are great. Love their conversations with little bits of pop culture and such thrown in. I also liked the tension between agent Nora and her star writer. So fun to see the person Nora really is and how the world perceives her due to her emotional wound, professional demeanor, and history.

The beginning of the romance was also fun. The texts between Nora and Charlie are hilarious. Yeti romance, yes, please? Race car bed -hilarious. They know how to get each other's skin because they're so similar. So I was rooting for this couple. But when they start spending time together professionally they become annoying to me for several reasons.

Here's where the writing fails the story spectacularly. Why does an editor as talented and sought after as Charlie have such a limited vocabulary that nearly every other word out of his mouth when he's conversing out loud contains the F-bomb? And they're weirdly used - Like "Oh my F***, this is good pizza!" or " I love your F***'n mouth." So unnecessary, so disappointing, and so against the ivy-league educated character type. There was the occasional use of language in the first part of the book but then suddenly Emily Henry lost her thesaurus and her only adjective becomes the F-bomb. It kept pulling me out of the story. Boo! Overuse of vulgarity when not used for dramatic effect has a tendency to dumb down characters and writers alike.

My next gripe is about the speed of the romance - if you can call it that. I personally like a good slow burn with lots of heart fluttering, will they/won't they tension, incidental contact, or tender kisses and gentle caresses that grow into something more. I think it shows how vulnerable the couple is with each other. Some good kissing scenes are great but have to be earned to really pay off for the reader.

Here, again is where the book failed. It went from a first kiss that had no real lead-in to some tongue kissing and some clothing being unbuttoned. Talk about 0-60! Nora describes it as being felt up and mentions his erection. TMI and it makes me think this is merely about chemistry, physical attraction, and lust not about a possible lasting relationship between soulmates.

They slow down for a little but there are a bunch of nearly did-it scenes that go on for too long. I find nothing appealing about a couple going at it on a table in the public library. Gross! Hope you get ticketed for indecent and lewd behavior. You're adults for crying out loud.

Then there are the why-we-can't-be-together reasons that were eye-rolling. Not sure how intentional the eye-rolling was meant to be because this book did a great job of delivering on making fun of so many Hallmark-type romance characters and plots.

I would have rated this book much higher had the unnecessary language been deleted and the make-out scenes been a bit less descriptive and more emotionally engaging. I loved the subplot with the sister and her family. I liked the star writer too. The townspeople were interesting and added to the humor. So much to like here. I applaud the epilogue.
