“Love - she planted the simple seed of this word in the hearts of all who knew her, and although, after a long life, she eventually passed on, she never died.”
What a beautiful story to end on! A forest witch uses trickery and magic to save her people, her land, from cold-hearted Christian invaders. It was beautiful retribution.

3.5 stars - I really enjoyed some of these stories, but there were also a fair few that I didn't connect to in the slightest.
Some of the standouts:
- Emma Bull's Joshua; I don't think this author has written anything that feels anything short of perfection to me, and Joshua is no exception. Loved this, and the desert setting helped it stand out from the rather foresty crowd, too.
- Kathe Koja's Remnants; beautiful, short and sad, with absolutely lovely writing. One of those stories that establishe ...more
