Herbert creates an amazing and deep world in Arrakis. Dune has ecological and geographical logic and its society is quite deep and interesting. The great houses in their decadence and the societies like the space guild are a rich element to develop the universe of dune and its mystique, which only adds to the political intrigue and mayhem between houses.

Read it years ago and just re-listened to it. I still can't believe this was _published_ in 1965. Way ahead of its time. Excited to read the following books in the series.
The Audio Renaissance audiobook edition was excellent overall, but did have inconsistent passages where the narrator alone voiced the characters, rather than other actors. Not a huge problem, but I did prefer the actors, particularly the one for Duke Leto. ...more
