This was WONDERFUL. As someone who has had experience of mental health issues, this was an intriguing premise and will definitely change the way I look at my life.
Nora was a character I certainly identified with, as I bet many people did. She had pain, and struggled to move on from her decisions.

Shelves: audiobook, fantasy, urban-fantasy

WOW. I don't know what I expected, but this audiobook was the right book at the right time. I'd been feeling really low for weeks and this almost served as more self-help than fiction, lol. I wish there had been less cat death/talk of cat death in it because that's a major trigger for me, but in all other ways this book...Really helped me. I even cried at it, felt things. Carey Mulligan's beautiful narration was the icing on the cake. ...more

Este libro fue todo un rollercoaster de emociones.
Nos cuenta la historia Nora quien se encuentra en depresión y un día decide que está harta de vivir. Al intentar suicidarse llega a un espacio entre la vida y la muerte que se denomina la biblioteca de medianoche donde los libro representan las diferentes vidas que puedes tener según las decisiones que tomas.

I would begin by saying this is an amazing concept which the writer has touched and has certainly done wonders with it. Everyone in the world is unhappy at some point or the other and all our lives are full of regrets. This book gives you a perspective around choices since we all are unhappy with our choices in life. 3.5 stars. I loved the concept, thought the execution was decent. But man, were the first few chapters a real bummer. I wouldn't recommend you read it during a particularly sensitive/depressing time in your life. Very easy read otherwise and finished it in under two days. ...more

Matt Heig es un autor y periodista inglés, que ha escrito varios libros de no ficción y ficción especulativa para niños y adultos. En esta obra, el autor propone un sitio transitorio entre la vida y la muerte que nos permite analizar las decisiones que hemos tomado en la vida.

Nora Seeds vive en Bedford y trabaja en una tienda de música, vive con su gato Voltaire y sufre de ansiedad y depresión. Todo comienza cuando su gato muere y un vecino le ayuda a enterrarlo, al día siguiente la despiden de su trabajo y se entera que su hermano no quiere saber nada de ella ya que por su culpa no lograron tener una banda de rock exitosa. Para cerrar el día con broche de oro, el vecino de la tercera edad, al cuál esta ayudando, simplemente ya no necesitó de su protección, y se dio cuenta que nadie la necesitaba en la vida. Tomo la decisión más inmediata: suicidarse.

Es en este punto, al tratar de intoxicarse con pastillas, que la conciencia de Nora llega a la biblioteca de la medianoche, y empieza el recorrido de su vida a través de los libros de dicho recinto. Donde cada libro representa una ramificación de su vida con base a ciertas decisiones tomadas en un momento en específico.

A través de las historias y las ramificaciones de su vida, Nora descubre todos los arrepentimientos de su vida, que parece ser la fuente de su decisión de quitarse la vida. La novela es fácil de leer, y hasta cierto punto es entretenido ver las diversas vidas de una misma Nora, aunque creo que meten de manera muy forzada la teoría de los multiversos y que las diferentes vidas de Nora están ocurriendo al mismo tiempo. Y en este punto es donde en gustos se rompe géneros.

De manera personal, la forma en que se va desarrollando la historia y el conjunto de “moralejas” que se vislumbran entre vida y vida, forman un extraño libro de “autoayuda”, o algo muy similar. Ese enfoque de supervivencia y autodescubrimiento con fórmulas simples y arquetípicas le dan un toque de lectura básica. Creo que hace treinta años me hubiera sorprendido y quizás hasta emocionado por las decisiones de Nora, la capacidad de asombro disminuye con las lecturas recorridas.

Concluyendo, recomendable para lectores principiantes que no tengan prejuicios en lecturas de moraleja o “enseñanza de vida”. ...more

Loved the writing style of this and how it showcases some profound thoughts wrapped neatly in a digestible manner!
For sure something that I would re-read many times over and gain new insights with each reading.
