If you've been a student of the Middle East in the last decade, it's been almost impossible to avoid Anthony Shadid's extraordinary work. He reported the war in Iraq with an almost holy kind of insight and love for the people who suffered the onslaught of war. After Iraq, he wound up, among other places, in Libya, where he was detained by Qaddafi's security forces; after that, he was drawn to Syria, and that's where he died.
