This sounds like a childish book. It is not. It tackles some very serious issues (child abuse, trans issues, etc). It is ambitious, original and captivating. It doesn’t always work, but I prefer a book that aims high and sometimes falls a little short than one that doesn’t try that hard to begin with.

Set in a future where it is believed that all of society's monsters have been eradicated, the main character Jam accidentally unleashes a supernatural creature from her mother's latest painting. When "Pet" enters the room he lets Jam know right away that his sole purpose is to find and kill a monster preying on a human in her town.
