Reading Novik has been uneven for me; I wasn’t too impressed with “uprooted,” but I think “spinning silver” is marvelous. To me, “deadly education” is even better; denser world building, more complicated characters, and an impressive system of magic. It’s like a less crazed “Gideon the 9th” (that is in no way a slight to Gideon, whom I adore) and a more gothic, snarky Harry Potter.
