Reading Novik has been uneven for me; I wasn’t too impressed with “uprooted,” but I think “spinning silver” is marvelous. To me, “deadly education” is even better; denser world building, more complicated characters, and an impressive system of magic. It’s like a less crazed “Gideon the 9th” (that is in no way a slight to Gideon, whom I adore) and a more gothic, snarky Harry Potter. Magical boarding school where every action is coupled with an attempt to stay alive. Interesting subtext on elitism and immigration/ belonging. Liked the references to accessing wisdom (spells) thorough immersive language acquisition.

It took me a full chapter to get into it, but once I did I was hooked. A Dark Academia delight!
