This book is the first one I read for a book club I made so it will always hold a really special place in my heart:) I LOOOVED IT!! It was amazing!! Never read a book with a protagonist like Bryce but I enjoyed every second of it. I really liked the way it was written. Like I knew what all the characters are feeling and the situations through different eyes- every characters prespective🧡🧡🧡

AN HONEST REVIEW FROM A SJM FAN

As a SJM fan, I was very disappointed.
First of all-the book is TOO LONG. It's made clear in the synopsis that Danika, Connor and the rest of the pack die- why we got a 100 page (give or take) build-up to their deaths that didn't add anything to the story or the characters is beyond me.
The first half of the book is horrible. I don't even know what to say about it- there are information dumps everywhere, the world-building is sloppy and just very exhausting to follow AN HONEST REVIEW FROM A SJM FAN

First of all-the book is TOO LONG. It's made clear in the synopsis that Danika, Connor and the rest of the pack die- why we got a 100 page (give or take) build-up to their deaths that didn't add anything to the story or the characters is beyond me.
The first half of the book is horrible. I don't even know what to say about it- there are information dumps everywhere, the world-building is sloppy and just very exhausting to follow. The writing is incredibly wattpadish- the use of the word ''alpahole'' is honestly the cringiest thing I've ever seen.
The second half of the book gets significantly better, especially towards the end-now don't get me wrong, it doesn't get good, but in comparison to the first part..it's an improvement. Because of the overused tropes this book follows, the plot is a bit predictable at times, but it has some little interesting twists that made me not hate the book completely. After I've finished the book I was very surprised by how bad it was, I really wasn't expecting something like this from SJM. While it is true that she isn't the most original writer, most of her books are pretty consistent and honestly very enjoyable (TOG!!!) so I was taken aback by the quality of this book. I later found out that she had no editor which honestly made everything make sense. Overall, the plot isn't bad, after I'd read the Synopsys I was actually pleasantly surprised by how different this book was from TOG and ACOTAR but after seeing the final product...
All of Sarah's other books are labelled as YA's, why she has suddenly decided to start catering to an adult audience is unknown to me-what it is known and very clear is that she has failed. Just because every page is peppered with swear words doesn't mean that it's a book for adults.
As usual, the continuous use of ''male'' and ''female'' is present throughout the whole book and honestly...the cis heteronormativity in this book is just too much-aand this leads me to my next point which is:
Bryce Quinlan- the female protagonist- is nothing more than the Walmart version of our dear Aelin. It honestly hurts to even mention Aelin in the same sentence as Bryce because Aelin certainly deserves better. Bryce is very unlikeable, she makes some very questionable choices at the beginning of the book which honestly made me not like her from the very start. We've seen SJM use this technique with many characters before though, right? Like Kaltain from TOG, we all hated her at first but then later throughout the series we realized she just made some bad choices and after all, she wasn't that bad. Well, this isn't the case for Bryce.
Bryce tries really hard to seem like a very feminist-y, very funny and bitchy cool girl, but almost everything about her just falls flat for me. Throughout the book she says things like ''You're such a male, with all the sports stuff"..like did I really read that in a recently published book in 2020???
NO FLAVOUR.
The only characters who I actually kinda liked were Ruhn and Hunt, they were pretty funny at times and sweet overall.
This is already too long so I'm not even gonna get into all of the subdued misogyny that's shown in the book, but long story short- as usual, Sarah manages to make every ''male'' hyper-masculine and every ''female" hyper-feminine. All of the tropes constantly play into harmful social norms and stereotypes and I honestly cannot be bothered anymore.
In conclusion, Crescent City is nothing more than a badly written, Wattpad feeling fantasy book with a ridiculous and unnecessary amount of swearing and one-dimensional characters who reek of cisheterenormativity . ...more

Was worth all 803 pages! This was just an amazing book to be honest! It got you in a happy mood at the start and at the end it really just hit you. I cried at least 6 times the last 150 pages. Damn.

Do I recommend it?

This book was my first read by Sarah J Maas, so I didn't expect any of the multiple plot twists that were in the book and that made more special and interesting. I absolutely loved it and I can say that it inspired me a lot. It was so good that when I finished I just wanted to read it all over again.
In conclusion, it is one of the best books that I've read and I cannot wait for the sequel. ...more
