magic, pirates, brief, and enemies to lovers. what else could i want in a fantasy book?! if you like fantasy and enemies to lovers, you really have no reason not to read this—it’s amazing!

The chemistry between the characters drove me crazy because I was like “Girl….He loves you stupid” Lots of fun though. Can’t wait to read the second one.

I don't often give things two stars. But in this case I couldn't get around it. Because of how alot of the prose and style of this book was framed i felt like I was being talked down to as a reader. The idea was good and her descriptions of the ships and how they were were pretty good too. But I just couldn't get around the style. "“I'm a pirate," I remind him.
"Yes. I just can't figure out if you're a good pirate or a really good pirate.”

This was a quick and fast read. I have been wanting to read this for a while so I just buckled down and did. It was a cute experience, but definitely one that shows that I do prefer some of the more mature writing styles of adult fiction authors as compared to YA. This book's writing, while it got the job done, giving you *NO MAJOR PLOT SPOILERS WERE HARMED IN THE MAKING OF THIS REVIew**

This was a quick and fast read. I have been wanting to read this for a while so I just buckled down and did. It was a cute experience, but definitely one that shows that I do prefer some of the more mature writing styles of adult fiction authors as compared to YA. This book's writing, while it got the job done, giving you some semblance of a world, a good enough plot line, and some insight into the characters, it stretches too far and touches each too thin. Quantity over quality. There was so much more that could have been explored if the author had really gotten into the nitty gritty of...well most everything. Alosa's backstory, her adventures, Riden, the world they live in, their journey, just...alot. Then I reminded myself that this was a YA fantasy novel, it does not have all those qualities and it focuses more on the characters and moving through the storyline. And it did that good pretty good.

It was a fast paced plot, which I enjoyed. Potentially even too fast in some aspects, like towards the end, but too slow in others. Pacing is a real challenge. I know some scenes that I would have stretched out or some I would have shortened. But again, this is a YA book and it got the job done. The main focus was on the characters, who were the heart of the story. And I did enjoy the characters!

Alosa reminded me of who celeana from throne of glass could have been if she had chosen a life amongst the sea. not the heir to assassins on land, but to beasts at sea. She was full of fire and spark, her mental comments and snide remarks left me laughing and just shaking my head in amusement. Her wit and charm and how she toyed with the males left me just in awe. I always appreciate a fearless badass woman who dont need no man to save her. So yes, I liked Alosa's character .

I also liked Riden's character. It was obvious these guys were gonnna ya know, from their very first interaction. There was some tension you could tell, and im sure with more detailed writing it would have been delicious, but the tension and banter we did get was pretty good. I loved his quid remarks and his utter frustration and bafflement when it came to Alosa and her behavior surrounding her 'predicament'. And he was a kind soul and just...who wouldnt have a soft spot for him?

But I cannot say I was alll that attached to the storyline. it was alright, and the plot twists were...eh, not that shocking or really...impactful. But they set up the second book, which I will read since I got the duology, so might as well.

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. To view it, click here. Really enjoyed the pacing for this book. Every chapter I was invested to know what was going to happen next. I loved the pirate aspect of this book and especially the siren aspect it was honestly a really great read!

Summary for me:

Alosas ship is being attacked by pirates of the Night Farer. The captain of this ships name is Draxen and he is the son of used to be commander Lord Jeskor. Alosa accepts to being held hostage by Jeskor as long as he releases her crew and gets her clothes. Draxen acc ...more
