Let’s start from the beginning.

It began a little dull. Started very similarly to The Hunger Games in the sense that Feyre was the one going out hunting and making sure her family lived. I found this relatively uninspiring, maybe because I’d experienced this feature of her character in other books with characters I liked more.

I was pleasantly surprised with this book. I had previously read Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas and was very disappointed with it. So I was a little leery to try another of Ms. Maas's books but I'm glad I did. This is a series I can stick with. One big score here is the heroine isn't annoying. She at least seems like a real person. She doesn't really have any special talent that would be considered extraordinary she has just had to work hard to learn skills needed to survive.

I enjoyed the beginning of the story seeing Feyre hunt in the woods meeting the wolf there you can't fault her at all that she killed it. She needed the deer is was going to attack to feed and clothe her family that has depended on her for everything. And wow what a family. There is no gratitude in them and I really disliked her oldest sister Nesta. But of course it wasn't just a mere wolf which Feyre guessed due to it's size but that sets the story on it's course. A beast comes for the one whom killed the wold and he takes Feyre to live with him. A life for a life. And here is the story of Beauty and Beast. Although he can take the shape of a beast he can turn himself back into a man he is just doomed to wear a mask due to a curse on his lands. Still of course he's gorgeous since he's Fae. This is where the story gets little slower. But it's necessary to see how Feyre and Tamlin fall in love. (It's a beauty and the beast story this should not be a spoiler). However I had heard there is a love triangle, I couldn't really see that with Lucien so enter Rhysand of the Night Court. From the moment he enters the pages you know he's going to be a big part to the story. He is complex, more so than Tamlin I think.

Of course in true Beauty and the Beast fashion Tamlin lets Feyre go, but she hears of things going bad she comes back for him to save the day. And this is when things get interesting. I don't want to spoil all the fun but she is faced with 3 challenges to free Tamlin from a power hungry Queen. In doing so she also makes an interesting bargain with Rhysand.

I very much liked that she had to use her head with these challenges and they didn't make Feyra into some super human that was amazing at everything. That's what I liked about her she was a hunter she could use traps and fight like anyone else would. And she needed help along the way.

I have read different opinions in regards to the love triangle on this and I think it's going to be a tough one. I love that I'm torn I can usually pick a side pretty quickly once both men are introduced and sometimes it changes as the story evolves. Although in this first book I would be inclined to go with Rhysand due to the complex, dark, dangerous well, just bad boy aspect to him which I can't help but love. I have to side with Tamlin. Both him and Feyre risked so much to be together to defeat Amarantha (god what a mouthful of a name) The way they had to work so hard to hold onto the little they had of each other not to show fear or any real emotion. He had to watch so much suffering. I guess I just feel so much for them that they have to be together. So with that said here is my problem with the love triangle: Amarantha is right humans are a fickle, untrustworthy people. For all of the claims to love one person you know there is going to be trouble for them in the name of Rhysand. In the human world there is no such thing as true love our hearts can be very fickle when presented with something new and exciting. I already feel bad for Tamlin. I can admit that the slow story of Tamlin and Feyra was lacking for me. And this must say more about my bad boy tendencies because the one time I felt a real spark between Feyra and Tamlin was when it bit her all high on magic. It was hot! The passion, heat the way he talked to her. I loved it. He needs to unleash that animal a little more if he wants to keep Feyra because you know Rhysand isn't going to play fair.

The other mystery to uncover with be why Rhysand seems to hate Tamlin so much. The way he tormented Tamlin while flaunting a drunken Feyra in front of him, there is a reason for that and I can't wait to find out. ...more
