If I cannot be better than them, I will become so much worse.

❗This review may contain some minor spoilers❗
I don't think I will ever love anything or anyone the way I love The Folk of the Air series. One has to be a literal genius to come up with something so incredible!! My mind is decimated. Firstly, the plot is fantastic. Using a direct reference from the book, this is like Alice's Adventures in Wonderland if Alice was a wrathful, murderous human teenager, and Wonderland was fu ...more

Pure magic! Exactly what you want from a YA fantasy novel! It isn't that often a novel makes me long for the next instalment after just ending the first instalment but this is certainly one of those times! I will be waiting anxiously for the next book.
The Cruel Prince is my first book by Holly Black but i'd heard many good things about her books from friends and knew I had to try her books. When this came up on NetGalley I jumped at the chance to read it early and Bonnier Zaffre were good enough ...more

This was actually a reread for me, as I wanted to read the last book in the series that I hadn’t gotten around to reading yet, I don’t know about you, but when a new book comes out that has been on hold for a while, I need to do a complete reread to get the maximum experience, let just say, I’ve read Harry potter lots of times!
So getting back to the review, Holly Black is amazing! There hasn’t been a book that she has published that I didn’t like, and it was this book that prompted me to read al ...more

Full disclosure: I picked up this book shortly after it came out...and then put it down. I have no idea why!
I finally decided to give it another try (primarily because of all the beautiful special editions) and loved it. The plot was riveting, the characters were intriguing, and the feel of the book was delectable.
The only thing that made me give it four stars was Jude. Just a few moments made me want to beat my head against a wall, and they all related to the MC.

“It's shocking," he says, as though he's giving me some great compliment. "I know humans can lie, but to watch you do it is incredible. Do it again.”
Wow this book is crazy!
Like I did not expect that.
I mean I read a fair amount of Fae stories but this storyline is sick!
First of all, by the first chapter, the story line already grew into me.
The story line is straight forward and fast.
Although some parts are very confusing. That sometimes I had to go back and read again.

I LOVED THIS

it was amazing

enemies-to-lovers,

When I express I want to read an enemies to lovers novel, this is the type of book I mean. Holly Black has never failed to astound me with her ability to spin urban-fantasy tales, and this is no exclusion. I waited a long time to read this series, solely because I knew I was not the largest fan of her last faerie based books. However, let me just say this novel redeemed her faerie writing abilities! I literally could not put it down, (Rest in Peace to my college assignments).

Unpopular opinion time—I didn’t like this book. Why? MILD SPOILERS ABOUT THEMES, etc.

The “romance” felt forced, and worse, it’s hella toxic. I refuse to support that kind of toxicity being normalized because it’s so dangerous for readers, and especially young women. And the sisters fighting with each other because some guy played them both? No! They should ditch him and stay true to each other. I’ve heard the rest of the series gets better, but that the toxicity gets worse.

3.5 stars, leaning towards 4. it got better as it went on. it could have been shorter though. not much happened plot-wise until a pivotal event around 250 pages in. i can see why people really like this book because of the numerous plot twists. jude is unapologetic and brutal and its enjoyable to watch her dance with power. one of the best things about this book was holly black's writing of the relationships. the complicated family dynamics were quite interesting for a YA fantasy novel.

I loved this book. My imagination was filled with beautiful dresses and people. I can't wait to read the next book in the series, The Wicked King.
