Having not taken a chemistry class for decades, I found the first part of the book helpful, particularly in explaining what the significance of the rows and columns. Some of the stories were pretty interesting, others not as much. Some of the explanations were clear, others not so much.

This book is filled with fascinating anecdotes from all realms of science. Sam Kean's writing style is lively, and even the endnotes contained lots of wonderful stories about the discoveries of elements and the uses they were put to. ...more
