I heard an interview with this author on Quirks and Quarks and instantly put his books on hold at the library. Shubin presents science in a very understandable way without dumbing it down at all. I liked The Universe Within better than Your Inner Fish but I'd still recommend this highly, without any reservations. Read it and feel smart :) ...more

A must read book for those interested in how much of our own bodies can be found in other creatures, living and extinct. This is another excellent volume for your science library that exposes the facts about our evolutionary background. If you walk away thinking that evolution is not true after reading this book, you didn't read this book. ...more

Shubin shows that the history of life that led to us weaves together really nicely. Various ways of looking at our biological history - the fossil record, the DNA of animals that went off on other branches, the weird anatomy we have in many ways - all dovetail.

He also has an easy-to-follow style.
