‘The Vital Question: Energy, Evolution, and the Origins of Complex Life’ by Nick Lane is a tough read for anyone without much of either a formal science education or science-related college degrees. As an undergrad biochemistry and cell biology major, the focus of learning about cellular metabolism (and specifically) oxidative phosphorylation was to memorize details that I would be tested on.
