Ok, here we go. I am not at all mentally prepared to write a review for this book, so pardon me if this goes downhill VERY quickly. Trust me, the moment I get to the characters I will die. Oh wait, I do characters first. GREAT.

“Six of Crows” by Leigh Bardugo has been an exciting and fun ride as I joined the crew from Ketterdam on an impossible heist.

So I was introduced to the Six of Crow characters through the popular Netflix show Shadow & Bone. I also know through the grapevine that there are spoilers in the second season of Crooked Kingdom—the second book in the Six of Crow series. This was such an incredible book, which did not disappoint. The book itself had so many shocking twists, likeable characters, and great world-building, and the story was cleverly written and highly enjoyable. The dangerous, intensifying adventure Kaz and his crew embarked on was full of suspense, hilarious banter, and unexpected moments, which simply made the plot even more engaging.

This was such an incredible book, which did not disappoint. The book itself had so many shocking twists, likeable characters, and great world-building, and the story was cleverly written and highly enjoyable. The dangerous, intensifying adventure Kaz and his crew embarked on was full of suspense, hilarious banter, and unexpected moments, which simply made the plot even more engaging.

One of my favourite aspects of this book was reading about each of the characters and their individual struggles. They were portrayed differently and had their own unique personalities, motives, and emotional backstories which made each of them interesting to the story. In addition to this, reading from multiple viewpoints helped better describe their own feelings and responses to the different situations they faced, and each of their perspectives were written very well.

I loved the characters in this story! The crew consists of Kaz, a crippled, but skilled thief, Inej, a spy known as the Wraith, Jesper, a sharpshooter with a gambling problem, Wylan, the son of a merchant with some talent for demolition, Nina, a Grisha Heartrender with the ability to control the bodies of others, and Matthias, a former Grisha hunter, out for revenge against Nina for throwing him in prison.

Despite several rocky starts, deep grudges, and the hopelessness of their situation at hand, the characters march on and persevere against all odds. I loved their contrasting personalities and ongoing banter, and the romances and interactions between some of the characters also added a nice touch to the story. The character development was amazing, and their struggles and ways they adapted to the challenges thrown their way was enjoyable to read about.

“I trade in information, the things men do when they think no one is looking. Shame holds more value than coin ever can.”

Overall, this was an enjoyable, exhilarating, fantasy read with a great cast of characters, and a plot which I found to be deeply investing. This is a book that I’d highly recommend reading, and I’m looking forward to reading the sequel!

edit: 2020-me could not comprehend the idea of having an opinion that went against the grain. Poor her. 2023-me is less apologetic, however. I did not like this book and that's final. There's nothing to feel bad over. Being contrarian is awesome. Unfathomably isolating.... but awesome.

OH MY GOD? THAT WAS AMAZING. I CANNOT WAIT TO READ BOOK 2. AHHH. Let me list down some of my thoughts:

* WHY are the characters SO young??? WHY??? It doesn't make sense. In my mind they're all in their 30s.

I absolutely loved this book!

The writing was amazing, the plot was beautifully captivating, and the characters were all incredibly complex and multidimensional, as were their relationships with eachother (can we please just appreciate the friendship between Nina and Inej, girls supporting girls are just my favourite thing in the world), anyone who likes an exciting, well written fantasy/adventure book, I strongly advise them to pick this one up!
