I would have liked to have given this a higher rating, but despite it being smaller than the other books in the series I did find it lagging and it took me longer to finish it that I thought. There was nothing particularly “wrong” with this book only when I’m on a book for so long I kind of start to lose interest *shrug*.

Firstly let me say it was wonderful to have Percy back as I will say I missed him in the first book and having him back was much welcomed. The book started off quite strongly with Percy being chased by two avenged gorgons trying to kill him but not staying dead themselves when Percy killed them. There was a whole lot of intrigue there with the fact that Percy also had no memory, like Jason and he arrived on the doorstep of the Roman demi-god camp. Things from there just got more and more exciting when we got introduced to two new heroes who both in turn had interesting backstories (which I loved reading about).

So why did this book drag? I just felt like it took too long for things to start moving and when they did they just didn’t wholly hold my interest like the PJ series. There I’m comparing the two series again but every time I get into these books I can’t help but remember the series that became one of my favourites of all time. Don’t get the wrong idea though, there were plenty of action scenes and like I said I really liked getting to know Frank and Hazel, but for me this book plot and writing style just lacked lustre and didn’t quite hold my attention as well as I was expecting.

I really hope the other books in this series pick up the tempo more as I felt these first books were mainly introductions for the characters and their situation AND, once again I will say the author did nothing wrong with these books just that I felt the writing didn’t have as much colour in it as I was expecting and the pacing wasn’t as fast as the PJ series in my opinion. But I would still recommend this series despite all I’ve said as these books have some of the best character development I’ve come across in a while and the author has a way of writing his characters in a way that makes us care about them in the end. I will read on and look forward to seeing how the Romans and the Greeks will work together.

A definite recommendation if you liked the first book in the series, but don’t expect it to be that much better than the first book. ...more
