Divergent is a novel, by Veronica Roth, that tells the story of a society where certain choices that are made affect your life drastically forever. It is told from Tris’s point of view, and her choice changes her life forever. In this society there are 5 factions; Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Erudite (the intelligent), Amity (the peaceful), and Candor (the honest). In this society, when you are 16 you must go to a test that will tell you where you belong in society. It is told from Tris’s point of view, and her choice changes her life forever. In this society there are 5 factions; Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Erudite (the intelligent), Amity (the peaceful), and Candor (the honest). In this society, when you are 16 you must go to a test that will tell you where you belong in society. Tris, who is from Abnegation, gets her results from the test but they come back inconclusive, so she must choose which faction to belong too. When Tris picks Dauntless as her faction, the phrase “Faction before blood” is really put to the test.
Tris enters the initiation process to become a Dauntless, and there, Tris meets friends and enemies who will shape her life forever. Someone Tris meets is Four. Their relationship develops, and she learns a lot about what’s within herself even though it’s been in her all the time, now is she is seeing being brought out. This text seems to deal a lot with being introspective, and it shows through Tris how she a battling what to do each day. Her faction is telling her one thing, but then she wants to follow what she believes is right.
The leaders of Dauntless are always watching Tris’s decisions, and in the society they believe everyone should have a place and should stay in that place. Tris is not someone like that, and she has to be very careful about how she presents herself in front of Dauntless leaders. This book is written about how Tris is perceived to other people, and it helps you really relate to the characters because all of them are around the same age as the readers, and it helps you sympathize with the characters.
The characters in this book are not very physically described as in much detail as other young-adult novels, but that’s why the actions of the characters in this book are so detailed. By the end of the book each character I believe does seem to be fully developed, but I almost believe that some characters could have been developed sooner to let the reader know what was going on. An exception to that is the character Four, it seems wise how the author keeps him a mystery and continues to let us in on who he is as his relationship with Tris develops.
Overall I think this is a fun book to read, even though the reading level seems to be easy for our grade, it gives you characters you can sympathize with and allows you to self-evaluate yourself and see how your choice affect everything around you. It definitely reminded me of books like The Hunger Games or Maze Runner, so if you like to read books such as those you will love this book.

Even though the teen dystopian adventure novel is getting a little formulaic at this point (I liked dystopian lit before it was trendy, dang it!), I still enjoy it. There was little backstory as to the creation of this society, but I loved that it was set in Chicago. Tris is a strong protagonist who grows increasingly more interesting as the novel develops, and Four's haunted heroism is touching and intriguing.

This book takes place in a future society located in what is now known as Chicago. It follows a girl named Tris who is included in one of five factions. The faction she currently belongs to when the book begins is Abnegation. The five factions were created in an attempt to keep society running smoothly so that war wouldn't break out like history had shown them. Throughout the entire book, Tris is conflicted with trying to figure out who she is and where she belongs. She's always felt as if she didn't quite fit the criteria for being in her current faction, so when she gets the option to change to a faction of her choosing, she decides to go to dauntless.
Although she doesn't quite feel as if she belongs here either, she knows that there is a calling for her to be here. Dauntless is based on the ideals of strength and protecting their community from what lies outside of it. This book is based on Tris figuring out who she is, which is where the title of the book Divergent comes in. She discovers what this is and what it means to her. She knows that it is a gift and a curse at the same time. She attempts to solve what her purpose is and ultimately wants to save their community from a force trying to take control of the system they have all become accustomed to.
Keeping an appropriate amount of major events throughout the book and a strong setting, as well as having strong characters, shows that this book is very well developed. It is very easy to keep track of the events taking place which makes it an easy read book that will still keep your interest. Even though there is a lot of action and conflict in this book, there is also some romance involved. Tris develops a relationship with a guy that is also in the Dauntless faction. They are both strong willed characters with a very good relation. They attempt to solve the conflicts in the book together and the fact that they are in a relationship and care so much for each other adds a very interesting twist to the book.
This book is a quick easy read, that will definitely keep your interest. Personally, I found the characters and the situation very relatable. The fact that Tris is a girl who is conflicted with who she is and where she belongs, is something that every can relate to. She is a strong female character who is also smart. Although her impulsive decisions may not always be thought through, she still manages to take control of the situation she is in. This is inspiring because no one makes the right decision all the time, but even if your decision or plan doesn't work out how you want it to, you still should take responsibility of your actions and try to fix the wrong you have done.
Personally, I found this book very entertaining. It is a trilogy and once I finished reading it, I knew that I had to complete the rest of the books. It keeps your focus and because it is an easy read, the reader can very easily follow the events and story of the entire book. The way that the entire book was developed came together cohesively and gives readers a way to relate to it.
