Divergent is a novel, by Veronica Roth, that tells the story of a society where certain choices that are made affect your life drastically forever. It is told from Tris’s point of view, and her choice changes her life forever. In this society there are 5 factions; Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Erudite (the intelligent), Amity (the peaceful), and Candor (the honest). Even though the teen dystopian adventure novel is getting a little formulaic at this point (I liked dystopian lit before it was trendy, dang it!), I still enjoy it. There was little backstory as to the creation of this society, but I loved that it was set in Chicago. Tris is a strong protagonist who grows increasingly more interesting as the novel develops, and Four's haunted heroism is touching and intriguing.

This book takes place in a future society located in what is now known as Chicago. It follows a girl named Tris who is included in one of five factions. The faction she currently belongs to when the book begins is Abnegation. The five factions were created in an attempt to keep society running smoothly so that war wouldn't break out like history had shown them.
