I wanted to add a bit more scifi into my reading list and this was a great novel to start with. It offered an experience I never knew I was craving.... a chance to geek out and follow a spaceship crew around their everyday lives. I loved all of the characters and hope I get to spend more time with them in the rest of the series. I imagine there are countless Firefly comparisons out there...

It was light, cozy and read a bit like an

Confirmed: This is not Firefly. Maybe more Star Trek Next Gen? The novel probably works best in episodic TV series format since all crisis were solved within minutes.

I have been wanting to read this book since ages and when two groups are making this a group read for this month, it became a no brainer to start reading.

I can live with not much plot present, crappy villains and the super sweet crew loving each other literally and figuratively, but I was bored with all the philosophies about human

I had very high expectations going into this because I've heard so many good things. And this was excellent. It lived up to expectations, yet it also didn't completely blow me away either...likely because I was convinced it would be good already. I really loved how hopeful and optimistic this world is about the future of humanity. Humanity grows beyond violence and destruction according to this book. There was a lot of discussion about alien anthropology which I found fascinating. I loved the di ...more

Mind-numbing. Insipid. I like sweet and gentle, but not if nothing happens. This girl goes on a ship and gets introduced here and there to spacer things, goes to market, eats stuff...

A sweet found family story in space with A.I., aliens, and augmented humans! Thank you Becky Chambers for crafting a new place in my heart for the Wayfarer crew. The nuance and backstory of each character was unfolded with such a clever and creative touch, revealing a fresh take on contemporary social themes through the lens of galactic space travelers. The feminist elements hyped me up so much that it made me want to write essays about them (how amazing it would've been to read a book like this ...more

This was an utterly delightful romp through space with a community of characters that I enjoyed more and more the more I knew them. Hard science fiction so rarely has deep, complex relationships and characters changing over time--this was awesome.

This was so good I did not want it to end. I will definitely be picking up the next book when it is released later this year.

This book touches on so many things. From personhood to the nature of inter- and intraspecies relationships to how time works in black holes. I liked the balance of exposition to dialogue. The characterization was magnificent and the world-building made sense.

I will definitely be recommending this book to friends and patrons. If they like Firefly or Lois McMaster Bujold, t

Wonderful book. First book in a long time that made me sad when it ended because I wanted it to keep going. At least I still have her next book to read even if it doesn't follow the same characters. ...more

Wanted to love this, because many good friends whose taste overlaps with mine recommended it, but while I enjoyed the characters, the lack of plot/drive annoyed me. I kept getting bored waiting for something to happen, and almost nothing did.
