I adore the creativity of the scenes, the gorgeous writing, and most especially, the perfect blend of whimsy and seriousness that make for such a fantastic, epic romance.

Books are letters in bottles, cast into the waves of time, from one person trying to save the world to another  - Amal El-Mohtar

A patient once told me years ago that seeing a Cardinal is a visit from a loved one who has passed away. She had dozens in her house - embroidered onto kitchen towels, cut outs from magazines on her fridge, enamel wall sculptures - in memory of her late husband. It seemed unbearably melancholy to me then. Now the cardinal on the cover of This Is How You Lose The Time

My goodness this book. I created a shelf for books to reread just for this one, as it'll take a few revisits to properly nail it down, and yet it's one of the more striking books I've read in a long time.

It's centered around two rival agents in a war through time and space (awesome) and their letters. This book can read like poetry and is some of the smartest writing I've read. My only complaint is it can be a tad overdone but it's all good. I had to read this book in small doses, but short chap

This book had a very original premise.
The writing style was quite different than what I usually read, no idea if it would be too flowery or just poetic for a native speaker. I considered it beautifully written.
I had a hard time immersing myself in the story tough, because of the way it is written, epistolary, and the constantly changing settings, that put too much distance between me as a reader and the characters. I also need more plot happening to keep me really invested in a story.
All that

Update: 11/12/19 Ya I still didn’t like this. Just definitely not my thing. I get why people like it but I just really really didn’t

I basically just ended up skimming this. This was just a bit too weird for me and I didn’t connect with the characters or anything that was happening. Cool concept but it just definitely wasn’t my thing

I have read a lot of books this year, and this is my favourite. It is poetic, unique, painful, strange, and a lot of other things all wrapped up in one relatively short, beautiful book. I really loved this one.

It’s been 7 months since I read this beautiful bit of magic, and I still find myself slipping into the memory of it. Without warning, always unexpected but never unwelcome.
