Well, that was...weird.
I am not even really sure where to begin.
"...a surreal version of Great Britain, circa 1985..."
Yes, that was odd. Pagers.
But that is not even the strangest part. There were the bizarre characters (who never have a sense of humor), the weird, never explained book jumping, and the random chapters devoted to...what? Nonsense. This book spends more time answering 'who wrote Shakespeare's plays?' than anything else. Jane Eyre hardly plays a role until the last quarter of the ...more

If you like puns, and you like books, then you have no excuse for not reading this series from beginning to end. The literati may rejoice, so long as they make no faces at the puns--elitism unwelcome.
Fforde tosses you into parallel situations, where book knowledge is the only important knowledge. And I mean story knowledge, not trivia. Thursday Next is a smart, erudite, yet totally inarticulate character. Lovable and darling, and tossed into increasingly difficult situations.

(2/26/2011) Jasper Fforde is the most awkward author I've ever seen; every book he writes feels like his attempt to get somebody to laugh at his jokes. Fortunately for him, they're actually funny. You can't expect to connect to his characters, but his inconsistencies and crazy worlds will get you thinking in a new way.
