REVIEW: CITY OF STAIRS by Robert Jackson Bennett
I've been a fan of Robert Jackson Bennett since the publication of MR. SHIVERS, and I make it a point to read every novel he publishes. He doesn't adhere to any one genre or theme: MR. SHIVERS was historical horror, THE COMPANY MAN historical urban noir fantasy, AMERICAN ELSEWHERE science fiction (and oh what a glory it was!)

I love the worldbuilding in this book. It has a neat premise, where gods ruled their own city-states until the people they'd enslaved (Saypur) rose up against them and killed the gods (at which point the extensive works of those gods were undone, killing many of their followers), conquered their conquerors, and then basically decided to let the Continent rot in poverty and devastation as vengeance for all the misery the Continentals put the Saypuris through. This was an interesting read. I didn't quite feel emotionally invested, but I was intellectually intrigued by this world and what was going on within it. I really enjoyed the primary characters in this book, and look forward to reading book 2 since Mulagesh was possibly my favorite character in this book. So much was laid out in this book, that there is still so much more to explore and understand.
