3/1/23 - This has been the year of the re-reads, not sure why. Not reading much and what I am reading has been favorites. Still as enjoyable as ever.
12/3/19 - I didn't realize I hadn't read this for almost 2 years, so I had to re-read it. I didn't realize until I was reading it that I haven't read it since I watched the movie. So of course the book is better than the movie but I LOOOOOOVE how they changed the Rich Purnell thing in the movie. WAY better and fun and cool. Still so disappointed tha ...more

I feel like there is a bit of forced Diversity™️ In the characters, but this book is to nerdy for me not to love. The movie actually did a fantastic job in my opinion, the book of course goes into far more nerdy detail about how everything works, and I admit I liked the fact that there was an autistic mathematician, the cool thing being that at no point was he referred to as autistic, but his character was written in a way that would be quite relatable to anyone that has had to put up with an au

If you are looking for an easy and fun read this is a book you'll want to pick up. I loved the concept and the science behind the story, although I feel the author could've done more with the plot. I enjoyed Mark Watney's sarcasm and sense of humor, but I would've liked the author to delved more into the fears and worries of the main character more. One would need optimism if stranded alone on Mars, but Mark seemed almost unbelievably optimistic. The secondary characters seemed a little flat. I

I couldn't help thinking that the author missed an opportunity with this book. Yes, it's a fairly good read and it kept me going until the end, but the character of Watney really doesn't help.
Whatever happens to him he keeps up this annoying jokey patter that starts to grate after a while. There is no character development. After such an extended time of extreme loneliness in a situation that almost kills him every other day, Watney emerges as exactly the same man he was when he went in. Nothing ...more
