Wow. I am blown away. This is a new-to-me author, although I had previously heard of Blacktop Wasteland. (Which has now been added to my TBR!). I grabbed this book at an independent bookshop during a recent road trip, and it did NOT disappoint!

This was alright but a little too heavy handed with the clichés (tough, grizzled old ex cons - one of them is referred to as discount Sam Elliot multiple times, southern backwoods jargon, the self sacrificing antihero), especially during the last third of the book. Also, if you’re squeamish skip this one, as it is full of graphic, gratuitous violence.

What a wild wild read! This book was WAY outside of my usual comfort zone, full to the brim with unrelenting violence, killing, vengeance, bloodiness, lack of remorse between the main two characters Ike and Buddy Lee. And yet... And yet... I kept reading because I read somewhere that it was on Barack Obama's summer reading list, last year a different book by this author was NPR's Book of the Year or some such honor, and because it was this months selection for my library Book Club meeting. Gritty, Violent, Heartwrenching. It's about love, regret, and vengeance. Trying to make right what was wronged. I read it in one setting.
